Seventeen-year-old wizard Lucy Heartfilia runs away from home to join Fairy Tail, a rambunctious wizards' guild famous in the kingdom of Fiore for its members' overly destructive antics. She is invited into the guild by Natsu Dragneel, a Dragon Slayer wizard from Fairy Tail with the abilities of a dragon, who travels the land in search of his missing foster father, the dragon Igneel. Lucy forms a team with Natsu and his cat-like companion Happy, and are later joined by the ice wizard Gray Fullbuster and armored female wizard Erza Scarlet. The five embark on various missions across Fiore together, including the subjugation of illegal "dark" guilds and demons created by the ancient dark wizard Zeref. They also gain numerous allies from other guilds and lands, including Jellal Fernandez, Erza's childhood friend from the Tower of Heaven who is initially manipulated into trying to resurrect Zeref; Gajeel Redfox and Wendy Marvell, two Dragon Slayers whose dragon guardians vanished together with Igneel; Carla and Panther Lily, members of Happy's race of cat-like Exceeds from the parallel world of Edolas; Juvia Lockser, an ameonna who falls in love with Gray; and Laxus Dreyar, a renegade Fairy Tail wizard and grandson of the guild's master Makarov Dreyar.
During a guild promotion exam held on Fairy Tail's sacred ground of Sirius Island, Natsu, Lucy, and several of their guildmates are drawn into conflict with the dark guild Grimoire Heart over Zeref, who has been living on the island. Though Grimoire Heart is defeated, Zeref's presence attracts the attention of the evil dragon king Acnologia, who obliterates the island. However, the wizards are protected by the spirit of Fairy Tail's founding master Mavis Vermillion, who freezes them in time for seven years with her defensive spell. After the spell expires, the returning Fairy Tail members discover that their guild has become the weakest in the kingdom. The guild participates in the Grand Magic Games wizards' tournament, regaining their status as Fiore's top guild. Aided by Jellal's new guild Crime Sorcière and Dragon Slayer duo Sting Eucliffe and Rogue Cheney, Fairy Tail also thwarts a plot to ravage the kingdom using dragons brought from the past through the time travel gate Eclipse. Later, Fairy Tail wages war with Tartaros, a dark guild controlled by Zeref's ultimate demon, E.N.D. The battle is interrupted by the arrival of Acnologia, who intends to destroy E.N.D. Before Acnologia can obliterate the wizards, Igneel emerges from Natsu's body, having hidden himself within the Dragon Slayer.

Celestial Spirits are Magical beings from their own separate universe, the Celestial Spirit World. Some Mages, called Celestial Spirit Mages due to their specialization in Celestial Spirit Magic, are able to summon Spirits by opening their Gates via the use of Celestial Spirit Gate Keys. These Keys are separated into two classes: the more common Silver Keys and the extremely rare Gold Keys.
Keys for Celestial Spirits are counted in Units (collectively without regard of Gold or Silver), and a Celestial Spirit Mage is noted by how many Units they have obtained. All Celestial Spirits are each named after a different astronomical constellation. Out of the twelve Gold Keys, ten are owned by Lucy Heartfilia and the remaining two are owned by Yukino Aguria, who also holds the key to the "13th Gate" of the Zodiac.
When a Celestial Spirit Mage receives a key and opens its Celestial Gate for the first time, they have to set up a contract with the respective Spirit. This contract consists of asking the Spirit which days it can be summoned by the Mage. This simple agreement, much to the shock of Natsu and Happy, forms a dedicated and serious bond between the Spirit and summoner. However, under certain circumstances, i.e. during battle, a contract can be asked to be completed later. Contracts can be broken if the Mage is arrested, releases the Spirit by him/herself, or dies. When a Celestial Spirit Mage summons a Spirit, it appears directly next to them, as that's where the Gates to the Spirit World have been opened. It's impossible to summon Spirits elsewhere. The Spirits must also abide by certain rules enforced by the Celestial Spirit King. The only rule that has been introduced in Fairy Tail so far is that a Spirit may not directly or indirectly kill its summoner under any circumstances. When the Gates are closed, it is required from both the summoner and the Spirit to agree upon the Gate's closure. However, Spirits can also be "forced closed" in battle, which means they can be forced back into the Celestial World by the summoner's will, though not every Celestial Spirit Mage is capable of doing that.
He rules all of the Celestial Spirit World and enforces the rules among all the Spirits. He has the power to stop time in the Human World.

The Exceed used to see themselves as divine rulers of the humans, guiding them according to the will of their queen, before they found out how weak they really were. The humans of Edolas generally hold them in high regard, as seen when Erza Knightwalker and a group of soldiers bowed to Happy and Carla upon their return home (not knowing at that time that the two were allied with the Earth Land Mages). Presumably, this is due to the fact that they are the only beings in Edolas whose Magic is located inside of their bodies, just like the Mages of Earth Land. Due to this reverence, the Exceed see themselves as angelic beings and above humans in general -- Their ruler is considered as the God of Edolas. However, the only spell they can perform is Aera and, as Byro said, the limited Magic of the Exceed cannot compare with that of Earth Land's Mages. This created strife when they learned that Lucy Heartfilia was in Edolas and could still use Magic, thus threatening the Exceed's power. As a result, their queen gave direct orders for the young Mage to be executed. (orders which were revealed to have been fabricated by corrupt humans).
However, it seems that the humans of Edolas do not truly wish to be led by the Exceed, as their King's ultimate plan, Code ETD, shows. In sending the Lacrima containing Earth Land's Mages on a collision course with Extalia, Faust plans to unleash an unlimited amount of Magic Power to sustain his kingdom for all eternity -- and by doing so, he has declared war on the Exceed race. Apparently the Queen's God complex has even gone to her people's heads, as when Wendy Marvell and Carla try to warn them of their impending doom, they arrogantly disbelieve her and start throwing rocks at the "mere human" and "fallen angel". However, everything, including the God Complex, the Queen's Magic Power, and governing the human race's death, were all just fabricated lies made up by the elders of Exceeds to protect their race. The Exceeds were a weak race that was often picked on by the humans. To protect their race, the Elders of the Exceed spread false information that the Exceed had many powers. This, in return, gave the Exceed more confidence to themselves while causing humans, even the skeptics, to fear the Exceed's godly power. The Exceed eventually added the Control of Human lives to their list of powers, but in truth they never had such power or wish to kill off any human. Shagotte was selected as the Queen because she had the ability to predict which human would die with perfect accuracy, and the Elders used that as evidence of the Exceed's power.
